Termite Control

Termite Information

Termites

Australia is home to some of the worlds most destructive termites, and termite damage is a concern for all home owners.

Termite Facts

  • The cost of treatment and repair of termite damage over the last 5 years in Australia has been estimated at $3.9 billion (source: CSIRO Media Release 2005)
  • Termites cause more damage than all natural disasters combined
  • It is estimated that 1 in 4 properties in Australia will have termite activity at some stage throughout its lifetime
  • Termites feed on many parts of a building that contain wood - framing, doors, joinery, cupboards - plasterboard and even cause damage to wiring.

Danger Signs

  • Look for termite mud tubes (tubes built from dirt and other materials) in sub-floor area, foundations, skirting boards, cornices, mouldings and roof timbers.
  • Soft floor boards, bulging, staining or rippling of painted timbers.
  • Bits of dried mud falling from joints in walls when tapped
  • Some species of termites make a “clicking” noise which is usually heard at night time.

Potential Harm

  • Untreated infestations can cause expensive structural home timber damage and repair costs.
  • Most home insurance does not cover termite damage as is it preventable (also the risk is too high, and too costly
  • Termites can be hard to detect and can gain entry to homes, building and structures via underground tunnels originating from the nest (which can be up to 100m away).
