How to Get Rid of Birds

Pest birds can be a real issue for you and your home. In addition to causing mess, birds can also spread disease which can be a little scary.

Pigeons and seagulls are typically the two biggest culprits. These two species make bird removal more difficult by a number of factors:

  1. Pigeons’ usual food is grain and seeds but they settle into different areas by searching for and finding processed food, such as unwanted takeaways and food from bins.
  2. Pigeons breed the whole year round (peaking between March and July), provided they can find adequate food.
  3. When seagulls develop a nesting site, they return to the same site year after year. Once established, they become difficult to remove.
  4. Seagulls can live up to 40 years. During this time, they can keep breeding and create a significant seagull problem for you to try and deal with.

Bird Removal Tactics

Removing birds’ food sources is the best way to discourage them from settling in and around your home. However, if you live in a busy urban area, this is not always a realistic solution.

There are a number of tactics you can try to stop birds from being a nuisance for you and your home:

  • Seal any holes in your roof or outdoor walls to stop the birds from nesting.
  • If birds have already developed nesting sites, you can stop access to these sites. For example, putting barriers over window ledges can deter birds.
  • Do not leave leftover food in outdoor areas as food scraps attract birds and encourage them to nest around your home.
  • Ensure bin lids and rubbish bags are secure. Gulls, especially, love bin bags because their sharp beaks enable them to discover possible food scraps.
  • Be sure to cover all outdoor furniture when you are not using them.
