Check for common signs to see if you have a cockroach problem.
Your home could be an ideal breeding ground for certain species of cockroaches. Key risks are gaps around pipes, drains and common walls with neighboring properties when dealing with Oriental and American cockroaches. German cockroaches tend to favor kitchens and can be prevented by keeping crumbs and other particles of food from accumulating in and around counters and cabinets.
The best way to prevent cockroaches is to deny them easy access to food, water and shelter, which are the main factors that attract them into your residence.
In addition to DIY cockroach repellents, there are a number of practical steps you can take to prevent a cockroach infestation:
Eliminate food sources - store food in tightly sealed containers or sealed plastic bags and do not leave food out on counters. Avoid leaving liquids in sinks or buckets.
Clear all waste food and liquid spillage - clean up food debris from under appliances, under sinks or food preparation areas. Empty the rubbish bin daily and keep all garbage in sealed bins.
Remove pet food, drink and litter trays before nightfall.
Rinse cans, plastics and bottles before placing them into recycling bins.
De-clutter - remove old stacks of magazines or newspapers, unused cardboard boxes and clutter from the floor or bottom of cupboards. Cockroaches droppings release an aggregation pheromone telling other cockroaches they have found a safe harbourage.
Varnish or paint wood shelves - wipe them clean regularly.
Seal entry points - to deny access to cockroaches. When dealing with German, Oriental and American cockroaches, the key risks are gaps around pipes, drains and common walls with neighbouring properties. Even tiny cracks behind electrical sockets and skirting boards should be filled to reduce potential hiding areas for cockroaches.
If you have already spotted signs of a cockroach infestation, a professional treatment for a reliable, long-term solution is recommended. This quick response is necessary to prevent cockroaches in your home or spreading to your neighbours.
